Taxmo for accountants: UK practice management
Taxmo's accountant plan is a practice management platform for UK accounting firms. It covers client onboarding and HMRC authorisation, AML and KYC customer due diligence aligned with the Money Laundering Regulations 2017, task and deadline management across the whole client list, compliance work including draft Corporation Tax and accounts production, a set of AI tools, and practice billing. Pricing is per active client with a free allowance for the first clients, no credit card needed to start.
What the accountant platform is
This is a separate product from the sole trader plans, aimed at UK practices. Everything in the top self-serve tier is included, and on top of it sits a practice layer: a dashboard with client health traffic lights, upcoming deadlines, a recent activity feed and practice KPIs such as work in progress, lock-up, utilisation and client concentration.
Each client gets a dedicated workspace, and a single search box hits names, UTRs, VAT numbers, company numbers, notes and tasks. A triage inbox gives one ranked feed of everything needing attention: tasks pending review, overdue work, uploaded documents, AML completions, signed engagements and stalled authorisations.
Client onboarding and HMRC authorisation
Onboarding runs as a single wizard covering the Companies House lookup, the client invite, the 64-8 or digital handshake, the AML verification email and engagement letter generation. The page's claim is that a typical new client can be onboarded in a couple of minutes once you have the company details to hand.
Companies House auto-fill takes a company number and pulls the company name, directors, SIC codes and the accounts and confirmation statement dates. A one-click professional clearance letter goes to the previous accountant, and a per-client tracker follows the 64-8 or digital handshake through to authorisation. Template engagement letters written for UK practices, covering liability cap, UK GDPR, MLR 2017 considerations and clearance, are emailed as a signing link: the client types their name and you get a signed PDF with an IP and timestamp audit trail. The templates are intended for review and customisation by your own firm.
AML and KYC under MLR 2017
The customer due diligence workflow covers identity, proof of address, beneficial owners, source of funds, PEP, sanctions and adverse media screening through a configurable integrated provider, risk scoring and a review cadence. A compliance overview gives a central view of verification, source of funds and risk assessment status across every client.
Biometric identity verification works by sending a magic-link verification email to the client and is pluggable to SmartSearch, Credas or Equifax for biometric ID, proof of address and PEP and sanctions screening. Manual upload always works without a provider key.
The page is explicit about the boundary: Taxmo helps you record and evidence CDD, but your firm remains the AML-supervised entity, whether that supervisor is HMRC, ICAEW, ACCA, ICAS, CIOT, ATT, AAT, IFA, AIA or CAI, and remains responsible for compliance decisions under MLR 2017. Taxmo does not provide regulated tax, legal or AML supervision services.
Work management across the practice
Task templates for VAT, year-end, Self Assessment, payroll and CIS spawn per-client task chains in a click, and recurring tasks spawn on a cadence you set. A deadline calendar is exportable as a subscribable iCal feed for Outlook, Google Calendar or Apple Calendar, and the tracked deadline types include VAT returns, Self Assessment, CIS monthly returns, Corporation Tax and PAYE.
A quarterly filing run supports review and bulk mark-reviewed across the practice. A document request portal chases missing paperwork, with smart nudges and an agentic AI auto-chase that previews as a dry run before it fires. Bulk email reaches any client segment. A capacity planner shows a weekly heatmap per team member, estimating hours from task type and projecting over and under capacity weeks ahead. Staff access is role-based with owner, employee and trainee roles.
Compliance and tax work
The compliance side covers VAT returns, a VAT registration monitor that cross-checks every unregistered client's rolling 12-month turnover against the registration threshold and flags watch, register or over, a CIS monthly return calculation, a Corporation Tax engine producing draft CT600 computations with marginal relief and a draft, review, approved workflow, accounts production from a captured trial balance into draft P&L and balance sheet in FRS 102 1A and FRS 105 style with a balancing check, payroll with compliant payslip PDFs, and a capital allowances register covering AIA, WDA, FYA and full expensing with written-down value carried forward.
There is also an MTD for Income Tax orchestration dashboard that tracks every linked client's quarterly status across the practice, so you can identify which clients are mandated and when. The qualifying income bands and start dates are set by HMRC's timetable and are subject to change, so check GOV.UK rather than relying on any figure quoted in software.
Alongside that sits a library of UK tax calculators and generators, including Self Assessment, mileage at HMRC approved rates, company car and P11D, director's loan and section 455, dividend vouchers, VAT error correction under Notice 700/45, Stamp Duty for England and Northern Ireland, Business Asset Disposal Relief, Capital Gains Tax, Employment Allowance eligibility, an IR35 off-payroll indicator, merged RDEC research and development relief, P60 generation, basis period reform, bad debt VAT relief, statutory pay, advisory fuel rates, National Minimum and Living Wage checks, Inheritance Tax with the residence nil rate band taper, and the CS01 confirmation statement.
AI tools
Ten AI tools are included, all with rule-based fallbacks. AI Filing Review scans every client's books before a deadline and flags incorrect VAT rates, unreconciled bank transactions, missing documents and compliance gaps, giving each client a readiness score. The AI Tax Auditor reviews entries the way HMRC would. AI Meeting Prep produces a one-page brief before a client meeting.
The rest are a client-facing assistant that answers tax questions and collects documents, a financial translator that turns statements into plain English client reports, an accountant coach covering tax law updates and newsletter drafts, a quote and engagement letter generator, AI-generated client mini-courses, smart notifications for overdue tasks and unbilled time, and practice analytics on client profitability and workload. Separately, bookkeeping anomaly detection scans a client's books for duplicate entries, round-pound estimates, outliers, missing VAT and unreconciled bank volume, and smart auto-categorisation promotes reliable merchant patterns into bank rules.
Billing, integrations and practice finances
Time is captured with a live timer and timesheets, and unbilled work in progress converts into a draft invoice in one click, with signable invoice PDFs and tracking of WIP, lock-up days, recoverability and ageing buckets. GoCardless handles direct debit for annual and recurring fees, with mandate creation, the redirect flow, recurring charges and cancellation inside Taxmo, and mandates can be linked to signed engagement letters so the proposal-to-payment loop closes.
Live two-way sync with Xero, QuickBooks and FreeAgent pulls invoices, customers and bank transactions per client from their connected ledger, respecting the client's own OAuth grant so there is no separate setup. White-label branding applies your practice logo, primary colour and report footer to client-facing PDFs and the portal. Every critical action is captured in an audit log with actor, IP and timestamp, and a client risk dashboard combines AML status, overdue work and invoice ageing into one score. A sales pipeline with a weighted forecast and an ESG carbon estimator using DEFRA conversion factors round out the practice tooling, the latter described as an indicative estimate rather than a verified assurance tool.
Pricing model, and what is not there yet
Billing is per active client, with the first clients free with no time limit and no credit card, and volume discounts applied automatically as the practice grows. Archived clients are not billed, and clients do not need their own subscription: they are covered under the practice plan and connect through an invitation link. The default limit is 50 clients per practice and can be raised on request. Current per-client rates and tier boundaries are on taxmo.co.uk/for-accountants and are not quoted here because they change.
The page is direct about the gaps. MTD VAT agent submission, where you file on behalf of clients under an agent authorisation, is on the roadmap and until then you export to your bridging tool of choice. Full iXBRL output for direct Companies House and HMRC submission is also on the roadmap, so CT600 and accounts production produce drafts and computations that you take to your existing tagging and filing software, and final responsibility for the CT600 filing remains with the agent. The application and database are hosted in the EU and uploaded documents are stored in AWS Frankfurt, retention is documented, audit logs record actor, IP and timestamp for every critical action, there are data export and deletion endpoints, and every processor is named in the privacy policy.
Common questions
What is Taxmo for accountants?
It is a practice management platform for UK accounting firms, separate from Taxmo's sole trader plans and including everything in the top self-serve tier. It covers a multi-client dashboard, client workspaces, onboarding with Companies House lookup and 64-8 tracking, AML and KYC customer due diligence, task and deadline management, draft Corporation Tax and accounts production, payroll, UK tax calculators, AI review tools and practice billing. Billing is per active client.
How does per-client pricing work?
You pay only for active clients, the first clients are free with no time limit and no credit card, and archived clients are not billed. Rates fall in bands as the practice grows and the volume discount applies automatically. The current per-client rate for each band is published on taxmo.co.uk/for-accountants and is not quoted elsewhere because it changes.
Do my clients need their own Taxmo subscription?
No. Your clients are covered under your accountant plan at no extra cost. They receive an invitation link to connect to your practice, and they can upload documents and respond to your requests through the client portal. This is different from Accountant Access on the sole trader Pro plan, which gives one accountant read-only access to one client's books.
Can I submit MTD VAT returns to HMRC as an agent on behalf of clients?
Not yet. Agent submission under an agent authorisation is on the roadmap rather than live, so for now you export the figures to your bridging tool of choice for filing. Individual clients on their own Taxmo plan can file their own VAT return directly to HMRC over the Making Tax Digital API, and you can review the return before they do.
How does AML and KYC tracking work in Taxmo?
The customer due diligence workflow records identity, proof of address, beneficial owners, source of funds, PEP, sanctions and adverse media screening, risk scoring and review cadence, with a compliance overview across every client. Biometric verification is sent to the client by magic link and is pluggable to SmartSearch, Credas or Equifax, while manual upload always works without a provider. Your firm remains the AML-supervised entity under MLR 2017 and remains responsible for the compliance decisions; Taxmo is the software you use to record and evidence them.
Does Taxmo produce iXBRL accounts and file CT600 to HMRC?
It produces drafts, not filings. Accounts production captures a trial balance and generates a draft P&L and balance sheet in FRS 102 1A and FRS 105 style with a balancing check, and the Corporation Tax engine produces CT600 draft computations with marginal relief and a draft, review, approved workflow. Full iXBRL output for direct submission to Companies House and HMRC is on the roadmap, so until then you export the figures to your existing tagging and filing tool and final filing responsibility stays with the agent.
Does Taxmo connect to Xero, QuickBooks and FreeAgent?
Yes, to all three with live two-way sync. Once your client connects their own ledger, you can pull invoices, customers and bank transactions per client straight into their workspace. The sync respects the client's own OAuth grant, so there is no separate setup on your side.
Where is practice and client data hosted?
The application and database are hosted in the EU, and uploaded documents are stored in AWS Frankfurt. The platform documents UK GDPR compliance with defined retention, audit logs recording actor, IP and timestamp for every critical action, and data export and deletion endpoints. Every processor is named in the privacy policy.
