PAYE calculator: gross to net pay

A free calculator for UK employees: enter a salary, add a workplace pension percentage and a student loan plan if you have them, and see income tax, employee National Insurance and your take-home pay, for the 2026/27 tax year.

What it works out

Income tax on your salary after the Personal Allowance, which tapers away on higher incomes, using the bands for England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Employee Class 1 National Insurance on the same salary. Student loan repayments for your plan, and a Postgraduate Loan if you have one, taken as a percentage of pay over the threshold.

The workplace pension is taken from pay before tax, as in a net pay arrangement, so it lowers your income tax but not your National Insurance or student loan repayments.

What it leaves out

Scottish income tax bands, which are different: see GOV.UK. It also leaves out benefits in kind, bonuses, a second job, other income, Gift Aid and the High Income Child Benefit Charge, and it works on whole-year figures, so a payslip can differ by a few pounds. It is an estimate for planning, not a payslip and not tax advice. Rates change each tax year, so check the current figures on GOV.UK.

Common questions

Does the PAYE calculator cover Scotland?

No. Scotland sets its own income tax bands, so the calculator covers England, Wales and Northern Ireland only. National Insurance is the same across the UK.

Does a pension change my National Insurance?

Not in the way the calculator treats it. A pension taken from pay before tax lowers your income tax but not your National Insurance. Salary sacrifice works differently and can lower National Insurance.
