Self-employed take-home calculator
A free calculator for UK sole traders: enter your business income and allowable expenses, choose England, Wales or Northern Ireland, or Scotland, and see your profit, income tax, Class 4 National Insurance and what you keep, for the 2026/27 tax year.
What it works out
Income tax on your profit after the Personal Allowance, which tapers away on higher incomes, using the rest of UK bands or the Scottish bands. Class 4 National Insurance on the same profit, which is the same across the UK. Class 2 National Insurance is not added: above the small profits threshold it is treated as paid, and below it you can choose to pay it voluntarily.
The result shows income tax and National Insurance together as a share of profit, a guide to how much of each payment you receive to set aside.
What it leaves out
It treats the profit as your only income and leaves out pension contributions, Gift Aid, student loan repayments, the High Income Child Benefit Charge and payments on account. It is an estimate for planning; your bill is worked out through your Self Assessment return. Rates change each tax year, so check the current figures on GOV.UK.
Common questions
Do I still pay Class 2 National Insurance?
Not as a charge. Above the small profits threshold it is treated as paid, which protects your National Insurance record. Below it you can choose to pay voluntarily.
