File your VAT return without the guesswork

Taxmo works out the nine boxes of a UK VAT return from your income and expense entries, shows where each figure comes from, and files the return to HMRC over Making Tax Digital for VAT. The step-by-step guide to doing your own return is at /file-vat-return-without-accountant.

What Taxmo does for your VAT

Your VAT is worked out from your invoices and expenses through the quarter, so the figure is known before the deadline. Each box can be traced back to the entries behind it, and you review the whole return before anything is sent.

Direct filing to HMRC is on the Starter and Pro plans. You authorise Taxmo once at HMRC's own sign-in, the return is filed against the period HMRC has open, and HMRC's receipt is kept with that period.

Is this for you?

VAT applies once your business is registered for it, so check GOV.UK for when registration is required. Most sole traders file a return every quarter, VAT on business costs can be reclaimed with a valid VAT invoice, and a late return earns a penalty point.

Common questions

Can Taxmo file my VAT return directly?

Yes, on the Starter and Pro plans, over Making Tax Digital for VAT.

Do I need an accountant to file my VAT return?

For a standard domestic return, most sole traders and freelancers do not. An accountant adds value for complex situations such as partial exemption, international trade or property VAT.
